Care that celebrates what makes each person unique

Life often feels like a whirlwind, pulling us in countless directions. Maybe you’re grappling with tough decisions in your career, relationships, or other areas of your life. You might feel overwhelmed, unsure if you’re doing too much or not enough, and frustrated by the lack of progress. Perhaps you’re experiencing feelings of helplessness, emptiness, or being misunderstood, trapped in a cycle that breeds existential dread, only to wake up every day for it to start over again.

This could be the result of stress, anxiety, or depression, hindering your ability to show up authentically in your daily life.

We all face mental hurdles that hold us back. Through therapy, you’ll embark on a journey of self-discovery, learning to navigate these obstacles with greater awareness, resilience, and intentional action.

No matter what that final thought brought you here, we realize that no two people are alike. Your session with us is personalized and tailored to your specific needs. We embrace the fluidity of the provider-client relationship, ready to explore wherever your journey takes us.

People come to us with a range of needs, backgrounds, and abilities that influence their response to mental health support. Our providers deliver comprehensive mental health support rooted in culturally responsive care, an approach that accounts for the impact of cultural backgrounds on each person’s care experience.

We SERVE children, teens, adults, families, and groups alike.

Ultimately, our goal is to help you reclaim your narrative and become the architect of your destiny.

OptiMind Services

Individual therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, is a person-centered approach – meaning, you are the sole focus of a single therapist who helps you develop and achieve your goals. The therapeutic process is designed to address your unique emotional, psychological, and behavioral needs. Our experienced and compassionate therapists provide a safe and confidential space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and challenges.

What to Expect:

In individual therapy, you will work collaboratively with your therapist to set personalized goals and explore the issues that matter most to you. Your therapist will also support you in discovering different aspects of your life that contribute to your overall wellness. Whether you’re facing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, trauma, or simply seeking personal development, our therapists are here to support you.

A Supportive Partnership:

Therapy is not about giving advice or providing quick fixes. Instead, it is a supportive partnership where you can gain insight, develop coping strategies, and foster personal growth. Your therapist will listen attentively, offer empathy, and guide you in exploring patterns, beliefs, and emotions that may be influencing your life.

Innovative Evidence-Based Approaches:

We use evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to your specific needs. Our therapists draw from various modalities, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness-based techniques, and more, to create a personalized treatment plan that suits you best. What sets us apart from other therapies is that we repurpose and creatively mix elements of science and research with personal and professional lived experiences to cohesively integrate them into a more comprehensive, holistic approach to wellness. For example, we include practices around art, nature, relevant cultural and spiritual principles, and fitness/nutrition to supplement your therapy.

Confidentiality and Trust:

Your privacy and trust are of utmost importance to us. Individual therapy sessions are entirely confidential, providing you with a safe space to express yourself openly and honestly without judgment. We do our best to honor your privacy. However, there are clear limitations, where we must break confidentiality, and take other appropriate actions, as warranted, if:

  1. You are a danger to yourself and threaten to harm yourself (e.g., suicidal).
  2. You threaten to harm another specific person (e.g., assault, kill).
  3. A member of your family informs your treating therapist that you seriously intend to harm another.
  4. You are seeking psychological services to enable someone to commit a crime or to avoid detection or apprehension yourself.
  5. You are being evaluated by a court-appointed therapist.
  6. You are being evaluated to determine your sanity in a criminal proceeding.
  7. You are involved in a proceeding where your mental competence is at issue.
  8. You disclose something that your treating therapist is required to report (e.g., child abuse, child sexual assault, and elder abuse). In these cases, therapists are required to telephone and file a written notification to the relevant public office, such as Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services. There is no choice in the matter of reporting.
  9. You are under 16 years old and are the victim of a crime.
  10. You are under 18 years old and your treating therapist reasonably suspects that you are a victim of child abuse.
  11. You are over 65 and your treating therapist believes that you are the victim of physical abuse. Also, therapists may break confidentiality if you are over 65 and the victim of emotional abuse (but they are not required to do so).
  12. You die, and the information you disclose is known by your therapist or documented in your record is important to an issue between parties making claims through you (litigation).
  13. You die, and the information being released by your therapist is important in
    1. Ascertaining your intent, or
    2. Deciding an issue, concerning a deed of conveyance, will, or other writing of yours affecting your interest in property (real estate claims).
  14. You file a lawsuit against your therapist for breach of duty (e.g., incompetence) or your psychologist files a lawsuit against you.
  15. You have filed a lawsuit against anyone and are claiming mental or emotional damages as a part of the suit.
  16. You have waived your rights to privilege or give consent in writing to limited disclosure by your psychologist.

Type of Individual Therapy We Offer

Telehealth/Teletherapy/Online Therapy

We specialize in teletherapy. It’s remote – meaning there are no commute times or waiting rooms. This is therapy at the convenience and comfort of your computer, phone, or other digital device that allows you to connect online.

What is Teletherapy?
Teletherapy can be described as just a click-away therapy. All you need is a computer/electronic device and an Internet connection, and you are good to go. Teletherapy, also known as online therapy, is therapy delivered through a virtual platform via a computer. If you’ve ever used FaceTime or Skype, it’s essentially the same thing – except more secure and with a qualified therapist at the other end instead of a distant friend or relative.

In an increasingly digitally connected world, therapy has caught on to the power of digital connection to help more people access the support they need.

How Do Online Therapy Sessions Work?
Teletherapy sessions work much the same way as traditional therapy sessions with only one significant difference – the therapist and the client are not in the same room.

Sessions are scheduled at an appropriate and suitable time and day for each party, who then log in via an agreed, secure video, messaging, or phone platform. The therapist and client can see, message, and/or hear each other in real-time during the session via the use of webcams and/or headsets. Through this virtual environment, they can interact with each other, and the therapist uses the same techniques and activities they would use in a face-to-face therapy session.

Teletherapy offers accessibility, flexibility, and new opportunities that in-person may not. We are also currently offering live chat/messaging for therapy at reduced rates.

Benefits of Teletherapy:

  1. Effectiveness: Multiple studies have shown that teletherapy can be as effective as in-person therapy in treating various mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. Teletherapy has demonstrated positive outcomes in reducing symptoms, improving well-being, and enhancing overall quality of life.
  2. Accessibility: Teletherapy has proven to be a valuable tool in increasing access to mental health services, particularly in rural or underserved areas, where there may be limited availability of in-person therapists. It also provides greater convenience for individuals with mobility issues or transportation challenges.
  3. Convenience and Flexibility: Teletherapy offers clients greater flexibility in scheduling appointments and eliminates the need for travel time to a therapist’s office. This convenience can lead to increased engagement and improved retention in therapy.
  4. Comfort and Privacy: Many clients report feeling more comfortable and at ease during teletherapy sessions, which can foster a stronger therapeutic alliance between the client and therapist. Teletherapy also provides a level of privacy for individuals who may feel more secure discussing sensitive or personal topics from the comfort of their own space.
  5. Therapist-Client Relationship: Research suggests that the therapeutic relationship between clients and therapists can be just as strong in teletherapy as in face-to-face sessions. Effective communication, empathy, and rapport can still be established and maintained through remote platforms.
  6. Continuity of Care: Teletherapy allows for continued access to mental health services during situations that may disrupt traditional in-person sessions, such as inclement weather, illness, or other emergencies.
  7. Evolving Technology: Advancements in technology have improved the quality and reliability of teletherapy platforms, ensuring clearer video and audio connections for a more immersive experience.

So, if you’ve been feeling hopeless or lost lately or struggling with a problem in your life that feels unsurmountable, individual therapy could help you improve your everyday life. Individual therapy is a good fit for many people because it’s the best way to get individualized support, more control over the pacing of your therapy, the methods used, the amount of analysis or feedback you can receive, and the timing of your sessions.

Mental Health Coaching

One of the most common misconceptions about “life coaching” is that it is therapy in disguise – or worse yet – therapy from an unlicensed practitioner. In reality, life coaching is truly its own unique service designed to help individuals meet the outcomes that will bring them success and fulfillment in all areas of life. It is important to understand that a therapist can provide coaching, but a coach cannot provide therapy.

Not all support falls under the categories of therapy for mental health. That’s why we offer coaching to be more well-rounded because we recognize that support and guidance for life goals are very much needed.  A coach can be of great benefit with or without therapy.

Coaching and therapy are both forms of professional support aimed at helping individuals achieve personal growth and positive change, but they have distinct differences in their focus, methods, and goals.

Coaching: Coaching is a goal-oriented and future-focused process that helps individuals identify and achieve specific objectives, whether in their personal or professional life. Coaches work with clients who are generally functioning well but may seek guidance to enhance their performance, develop skills, or overcome obstacles. Coaches do not diagnose or treat mental health disorders; instead, they focus on empowering clients to set clear goals, take action, and achieve success.

In coaching, the relationship between the coach and client is more collaborative and less hierarchical than in therapy. Coaches may use techniques like questioning, active listening, and accountability to support their clients in reaching their desired outcomes. Coaching can cover various areas such as career development, life transitions, relationship improvements, and personal fulfillment.

Therapy: Therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, is a therapeutic process aimed at addressing emotional, mental, and behavioral challenges that may be causing distress or impairment in an individual’s life. Therapists work with clients to explore underlying issues, emotions, and thought patterns to promote healing and personal growth. Therapy is often used to address mental health conditions, trauma, and unresolved issues from the past.

The therapeutic relationship in therapy is based on the principles of trust, confidentiality, and professional boundaries. Therapists use evidence-based techniques and interventions to help clients gain insight, improve coping skills, and process difficult emotions. Therapy is a more in-depth and exploratory process, with a focus on understanding and resolving internal conflicts and emotional struggles.

Key Differences:

  1. Focus: Coaching focuses on setting and achieving specific goals, while therapy emphasizes resolving emotional and psychological issues.
  2. Client Functioning: Coaching typically works with clients who are already functioning well, seeking further development, while therapy is suitable for individuals experiencing distress or mental health challenges.
  3. Time Frame: Coaching tends to be shorter-term and goal-oriented, whereas therapy may be more long-term and process-oriented.
  4. Approach: Coaching uses a collaborative approach, whereas therapy may involve more in-depth exploration of emotions and past experiences.

WHO IS COACHING MOST EFFECTIVE FOR?

We’ll cut to the chase. Coaching is going to be most effective for those who are in a self-assured and motivated psychological state. Coaching is highly beneficial for those who have identified a focused area of their life or internal experience they’d like to improve on. Because coaching is offered in 30-minute and 45-minute increments, coaching is most beneficial for those who are ready to dive in and receive consistent and intentional results and action-based feedback. Are you ready to pull your bootstraps up and get to work? Let’s do this!

STRATEGIC SUPPORT & ACCOUNTABILITY WITH CONVENIENT ACCESS

Our coaching services are provided virtually through a secure online platform, and additional communication capabilities will be determined with you in your first coaching session!

It’s important to note that one is not better than the other. Both coaching and therapy are complementary and can be used together when appropriate. Additionally, you should choose the approach that aligns best with your specific needs and objectives.

Common myths about Mental Wellness coaches

As a relatively new and rapidly growing area of coaching, there are many misconceptions about mental wellness coaching.

Myth #1: A mental health coach can’t help with “real” mental health issues

While mental health coaches aren’t necessarily therapists, they can still draw on principles and practices from evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Extensive research backs the use of these interventions in a clinical setting to treat conditions like depression and anxiety. And mental health coaches’ use of these techniques for common problems like stress is promising.

Many people choose a mental health coach over a therapist when they want professional support, but don’t have a complex mental health condition such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, or suicidal thoughts. Coaches can help clients manage emotions, change their way of approaching problems, improve relationship skills, and reduce stress and anxiety—all of which bolster mental health.

Myth #2: Mental health coaches aren’t highly trained

Our mental health coaches are rigorously trained. The mental health coaches in the Optimind network undergo extensive vetting and training.  Only the most highly trained and passionate candidates are accepted.

Our mental health coaches complete a comprehensive onboarding process designed and overseen by a team of clinicians that focuses on CBT principles and techniques. All coaches are given opportunities to practice this approach before meeting with clients. And just like therapists, coaches are trained to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in their relationships with clients.

Myth #3: Mental health coaches use a one-size-fits-all approach

Another misconception is that coaches rely on generic, one-size-fits-all techniques with clients. In reality, coaches tailor their approaches to best serve each client’s unique needs and circumstances.

Myth #4: Seeing a therapist is always the best option

Mental health occurs on a spectrum, and psychotherapy may not be the best option for your specific needs and challenges. Or, maybe you met with a therapist previously to better understand the effects of past experiences on your life and are now in a better position to focus on personal and professional development. While therapy can be a great fit for many people, for others there are several indicators that mental health coaching may be a better match. These include:

  • The mental and emotional health challenges you’re dealing with are on the mild end of the spectrum.
  • You prefer a shorter-term approach to personal growth and development.
  • You want to improve your stress management or work-life balance.
  • You want help in clarifying your values, goals, and purpose.
  • You’re interested in learning practical, actionable ways to address your personal and professional challenges.
  • You’re willing to try self-assessments, reading, journaling, or other “homework” to help overcome personal challenges.

Is a mental health coach right for me?

Here are some key questions to ask yourself in deciding whether mental health coaching is the best type of support for you.

  1. Do you have a mental health condition that significantly affects your life? If you live with significant anxiety or depression, PTSD, schizophrenia, or another complex condition, you may need a level of mental health care that a mental wellness coach cannot provide.
  2. Are you using, or would you like to use, medication to help manage your mental health? A coach cannot prescribe medication, and therefore may not be the best fit for you.
  3. Do you need to supplement your existing mental health treatment? A coach can be a great addition to other types of mental health treatment. In a situation like this, it’s important to have a transparent conversation with your therapist and coach to ensure the care you’re receiving in each location is unique and appropriate for separate concerns.
  4. Are you struggling with problems that are mainly situational or temporary, such as career troubles, grief from a recent loss, or stress? Coaching may make sense.
  5. Are you seeking a proactive approach to mental health? If you aren’t experiencing a pressing mental health concern but want to be proactive with your mental health, coaching could be the solution.
  6. Are you looking to become a better leader, employee, or member of your family and community? This kind of self-development is something that emotional wellness coaches excel at addressing.

Types of Groups We Offer

PROCESS-ORIENTED GROUPS

Process-oriented group therapy typically consists of around eight to twelve people who meet regularly for the common purpose of finding out more about who they are, their current struggles and what they would like to change in their personal lives and relationships with others.

Psychoeducation Groups: These groups focus on providing education and information about specific mental health issues, coping skills, or life skills. They are designed to increase participants’ understanding of their challenges and equip them with knowledge and strategies to manage their emotions and behaviors effectively.

Support Groups: Support groups bring together individuals who share similar experiences or concerns, such as grief, addiction recovery, or chronic illness. Members provide each other with emotional support, validation, and empathy, promoting a sense of community and connection.

Skills-Development Group: These groups focus on teaching and practicing specific skills, such as social skills training, anger management, or assertiveness training. Participants learn and apply these skills to improve their interactions and cope with life challenges more effectively.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Groups: CBT groups emphasize changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to mental health issues. Members learn to identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and develop healthier coping strategies.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Groups: DBT groups are designed to help individuals with emotional dysregulation and self-destructive behaviors. Members learn mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness skills.

Trauma Support Groups: These groups provide a safe space for individuals who have experienced trauma to share their experiences, process their emotions, and receive support from others who have gone through similar experiences.

Mindfulness and Meditation Group: A gathering of individuals who come together to practice meditation in a supportive and communal setting. In a meditation group, participants engage in various meditation techniques, such as mindfulness, breath awareness, loving-kindness, or guided visualizations, to cultivate inner peace, focus, and self-awareness.

Guided Art Groups: In art groups, participants learn to use an art form to find calm, relief, mindful attention, and ways to express themselves and explore their emotions. This creative process can aid in emotional processing and healing. Learn more.

Depression has a dangerous tendency to develop into a vicious cycle, where it builds upon itself. Like a tumor, depression can start barely noticeable, before it becomes life-altering. Depression is not just the typical sadness that we feel. When depressed, your motivation and confidence will drop, which can lead to isolation, withdrawal, and lack of energy. As a result, normal tasks – work, relationships, and basic self-care – fall by the wayside. This adds new problems, causing more stress, which reinforces the depression. And the vicious cycle continues.

Depression affects millions of individuals worldwide. It casts a shadow over daily life, sapping joy, energy, and motivation.

Depression can change how you think, feel, and act. It interferes with your ability to enjoy life, work, sleep, and take care of yourself. Common symptoms of depression are:

  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Decrease or increase in appetite
  • Depressed mood most of the day, almost every day
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Feeling hopeless, helpless or worthless
  • Difficulty with sleep
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Thoughts of death, giving up, suicide or hurting yourself

But there is hope, and therapy can be a guiding light on the path to healing.

Therapy Can Help You Overcome Depression

The lie that depression often tells us is, “Things will never get better.” It makes you believe that how you feel now is how you will always feel, but it’s ABSOLUTELY not true. Just like all things in life, depression is not permanent. You can get better.

Therapy provides a safe and supportive space for you to express your feelings, fears, and challenges without judgment. Licensed therapists trained in evidence-based approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), or psychodynamic therapy, work collaboratively with you to understand the root causes of your depression and develop personalized treatment plans.

Through therapy, you learn coping strategies to manage distressing thoughts and emotions. Therapists help you reframe negative thought patterns and develop healthier ways of thinking, empowering you to challenge depressive thinking and cultivate self-compassion. The therapeutic alliance, the trusting relationship between the therapist and client, is a cornerstone of the healing process. We provide validation and support, offering hope and instilling confidence in your ability to overcome depression.

Therapy also equips you with valuable life skills, such as stress management techniques, effective communication, and problem-solving strategies, helping you navigate life’s challenges beyond therapy sessions.

Remember, seeking therapy for depression is not a sign of weakness but a courageous step toward reclaiming your life and well-being. While therapy cannot erase life’s hardships, it provides a roadmap for personal growth and resilience, allowing you to move from darkness to a place of hope and healing. Reach out to a therapist today and embark on your journey of transformation and self-discovery. There is a brighter future ahead, and therapy can help you find it.

It may be hard to take the first step in asking for help when you feel depressed. But YOU MATTER. And YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Let’s break the depressive cycle. One day at a time.

Anxiety is a very common experience – so common that we consider it the common cold of mental health.  Anxiety can be useful at varying degrees. We all experience some anxiety from time to time. We can learn to leverage it to motivate us to do things. But when anxiety heightens, it can be debilitating – leading you to avoid most things that are unpleasant and preventing you from being able to show up each day at your best.

Untreated anxiety tends to cause us to adopt a mindset that “overestimates a situation and underestimates our ability to deal with it.” Anxiety can mislead us into doubting ourselves, hyper-focusing on the negativity, and depreciating or even dismissing our strengths and anything good going on in our lives.

When anxiety takes over, you can get lost in a barrage of intrusive thoughts that can cause immense stress, constant avoidance, and inability to focus.

You may feel stuck in negative thought patterns and are worried all the time. This can create a belief system that you begin accepting as “truth” from which you view the world from.

Do any of the following resonate with you?

  • You’re unable to do your day-to-day responsibilities.
  • You’re in a constant state of stress.
  • You obsess about what if, what could, what would or what should?
  • You experience dread, fear, and racing thoughts.
  • You procrastinate on a task or project more times than you can count.
  • You feel like there are so many things to manage. Your forever-growing “to-do list” leaves you feeling completely overwhelmed.

If any of this sounds true to you, I want you to know that you’re not alone.  What you are going through is common and happens to the best of us. And there is help.

You don’t have to wait for things to get better. You can learn to manage your anxiety, instead of letting your anxiety manage you. You have a CHOICE. And you are FREE to act on those choices. There are no guardrails in your life – and in therapy, you will be empowered to exercise your choices.

It’s possible to feel better. Imagine a life where you could…

  • Stop worrying all the time.
  • Have unstoppable courage to live the life you truly want

Therapy for Kids and Teens

Seeing your child struggle can be one of the most difficult experiences as a parent. Every parent wants the best for their child. However, the challenges of supporting children who are struggling with anxiety, depression, anger, school, and peer relational conflicts, can negatively impact the family dynamic.

Therapy for young individuals requires a very special kind of care.

What to expect with therapy for children:
The first session may or may not be with the parents/guardians depending on your child’s age – the older they are, the more they may value their autonomy and privacy.

Therapy for younger children is especially different than counseling adults. Since children are in the early developmental stages where they learn and grow through play and other expressive means of social interaction, during therapy with children we engage in art, movement, and play therapy. By using these modalities with children, we begin to alter their behavior and emotional well-being – all while they are having fun!

Parent Management Training (PMT), Family Sessions, and Case Management:
Children are greatly reliant on the people around them to become successful. Sometimes therapy cannot be successful without family involvement. Family sessions, Parent Management Training, and Case Management will be evaluated as a part of counseling for children. The frequency of family sessions/home visits is determined on a case-by-case basis.

Family sessions and Parent Management Training aims to promote understanding and collaboration among family members to solve the problems of one or more individuals. For example, if a child is having social and academic problems, therapy will also focus on the family patterns that may contribute to the child’s acting out, rather than evaluating the child’s behavior alone. As the family uncovers the source of the problem, they can learn to support the child and other family members and work proactively on minimizing or altering the conditions that contribute to the child’s unwanted behavior.

Family sessions are designed to address specific issues that affect the psychological health of the family, such as major life transitions or mental health conditions. It may be used as the primary mode of treatment or as a complementary approach. Families can benefit from therapy when they experience any stressful event that may strain family relationships, such as financial hardship, divorce, or the death of a loved one. In addition, it can be effective in treating mental health concerns that impact the family as a whole, such as depression, substance abuse, chronic illness, and food issues, or everyday concerns, like communication problems, interpersonal conflict, or behavioral problems in children and adolescents.

A major goal of counseling for children is to encourage and support the youth population of this time to embody a growth mindset – a concept popularized by Stanford professor, Carol Dweck. A growth mindset is the belief you can improve through practice. Children with a growth mindset tend to see challenges as opportunities to grow because they understand that they can improve their abilities by pushing themselves. If something is hard, they understand it will push them to get better. A key to making progress and moving forward is self-advocacy. Speaking up when something isn’t working and asking for support can lead to solutions. Self-advocacy develops over time. Kids can start learning and practicing the skills at a young age. The earlier that happens, the better.

Additional Support Services We Offer for Kids:

We offer mentorship, coaching, and art sessions that can be useful on their own or supplemented with therapy. For more information, contact us today!

Have you experienced abuse? Verbal, physical, emotional, sexual, or spiritual? Do you have childhood trauma(s) that won’t let you go or that you can’t let go of? Have you gone through some major, abrupt changes in your life and you’re having a hard time adjusting?

Trauma is a deeply distressing event or experience that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, leaving a lasting impact on their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. Traumatic events can vary widely and may include abuse, violence, accidents, natural disasters, or other life-altering situations. Trauma can lead to a range of reactions, such as anxiety, depression, dissociation, flashbacks, or difficulty forming trusting relationships.

Everyone will experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives. Many people recover with time and support from loved ones. But others experience lasting effects and may continue to live with deep emotional pain, confusion, fear, or even post-traumatic stress (PTSD) far after the event has passed.

Traditional talk therapy is often not enough if you’ve experienced trauma. There are physical, chemical, and psychological responses that can keep you feeling stuck.

Trauma-informed therapy is an approach to mental health care that recognizes the prevalence and impact of trauma on individuals’ lives. This therapeutic model emphasizes creating a safe and supportive environment where clients feel heard, validated, and respected. Trauma-informed therapists are sensitive to the unique needs of trauma survivors and avoid re-traumatizing clients by focusing on empowerment, choice, and collaboration in the healing process.

Trauma-informed therapy aims to help you regain a sense of control, rebuild resilience, and process traumatic memories in a gradual and manageable manner. Therapists may employ various evidence-based modalities, such as Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), or Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), to assist clients in addressing trauma-related symptoms and fostering post-traumatic growth.

Trauma-informed therapy helps you explore your past in a safe space, even if the trauma itself is not as seemingly overt. Through therapy, you may find that some things you thought were normal are rooted in trauma. Many clients find themselves saying “It’s just how it is,” or “That’s the way I’ve always been,” when, in fact, they developed that habit because of a reaction to past trauma.

Healing from trauma is a process that leads to freedom and a refreshed outlook on life. The real path toward healing is a gentle, safe, and trusting one. This journey towards healing can lead to POST-TRAUMATIC GROWTH (PTG) – a concept describing positive psychological change as a result of struggling with highly challenging, highly stressful life circumstances.

You may not realize it yet, but your trauma, pain, and suffering have a purpose.

One study suggests that “nearly 50 percent of trauma survivors experience post-traumatic growth after a traumatic event…examples of areas for growth include personal strength, appreciation for life, new possibilities in life, spiritual change, and relationships with others.”

Trauma-informed therapy paves the way for healing, recovery, and renewed hope. And we are here to offer an approach to guide you toward reclaiming your life and restoring a sense of well-being.

In today’s digital age, accessing mental health and wellness support has become more convenient and accessible than ever before, thanks to technological advancements that provide us with different ways to communicate and connect.

Live chat and messaging support for mental health and wellness provide individuals with a secure and confidential space to connect with trained professionals and receive emotional guidance, encouragement, and support.

How it Works:

  1. You will need to schedule a time and day the same way you would with any support services.
  2. Chat sessions are offered in 15-minute increments with a max of an hour.
  3. At the scheduled time, you will log into your account to start typing and chatting with your therapist/coach.

It’s that easy.

Real-Time Connection: Live chat allows individuals to communicate in real-time with mental health professionals, offering immediate support and reducing wait times for assistance. This instant connection can be especially valuable during moments of distress or when seeking urgent help.

Convenience and Flexibility: Live chat and messaging support offer flexibility in scheduling sessions, making it easier for individuals to seek help without worrying about time constraints or travel. It accommodates various schedules and allows for support in the comfort of one’s own environment.

Anonymity and Privacy: For those who may feel hesitant about seeking traditional in-person therapy or even video therapy, live chat and messaging support offer a sense of anonymity and privacy. Individuals can freely express themselves without concerns about social stigma.

Text-Based Communication: Written communication in live chat and messaging provides individuals with a unique opportunity to articulate their thoughts, emotions, and concerns with greater clarity and thoughtfulness. This can be especially beneficial for those who find it challenging to express themselves verbally.

Continuity of Care: Live chat and messaging platforms can offer continuity of care, enabling individuals to maintain communication with their mental health professional between scheduled appointments. This fosters a more consistent and ongoing support system.

Diverse Range of Issues: Live chat and messaging support cater to a wide range of mental health and wellness concerns, including stress management, anxiety, depression, personal development, relationship issues, and more. It allows individuals to seek guidance on various topics that impact their well-being.

Global Accessibility: Live chat and messaging support transcend geographical boundaries, making mental health and wellness services accessible to individuals regardless of their location. This global reach ensures that support is available to anyone in need.

While live chat and messaging support can offer valuable assistance for many mental health and wellness concerns, it is important to note that it may not be suitable for severe or crisis situations. In such cases, immediate in-person or emergency help is essential. Nevertheless, live chat and messaging support serve as a vital complement to other therapeutic services, providing an additional avenue for individuals to seek guidance, gain insights, and nurture their mental well-being in the digital age.

Are you an aspiring mental health professional looking to enhance your skills and deepen your clinical expertise? Look no further!

We offer opportunities for interns and professional staff to nurture your professional growth and support you on your journey to becoming a confident and competent mental health practitioner.

Clinical supervision is for professional mental health professionals and interns looking to acquire clinical hours towards licensure with the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS).

Clinical supervision is a formal process between a more experienced, seasoned professional and an intern, in which the supervisee’s clinical work is reviewed and reflected upon, with the aims of: improving the supervisee’s work with clients; ensuring client welfare; supporting the supervisee in relation to their work, and supporting the supervisee’s professional development.

The formal process of clinical supervision to get licensed with the BBS in the United States typically involves several steps, which may vary slightly depending on the state’s specific requirements. Here is an overview of the general process:

  1. Education and Training: Before beginning the clinical supervision process, individuals must first complete the required education and training to become eligible for licensure. This typically includes earning a master’s or doctoral degree in a qualifying mental health field, such as psychology, social work, counseling, or marriage and family therapy.
  2. Registration as an Intern: Once the educational requirements are met, individuals apply for registration as an intern with the BBS in their state. This allows them to gain supervised experience while providing mental health services to clients under the supervision of a licensed mental health professional.
  3. Finding a Qualified Supervisor: Interns must secure a qualified clinical supervisor who holds the appropriate level of licensure and meets the state’s criteria for supervisory qualifications. The supervisor should have experience in the intern’s specific mental health discipline and be approved by the BBS.
  4. Supervised Hours: Interns are required to complete a specified number of supervised hours, providing direct client services while under the guidance of their supervisor. The number of required hours varies by state and the type of license being pursued (e.g., Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, etc.).
  5. Supervision Sessions: During the supervision process, the intern and supervisor engage in regular supervision sessions. These sessions involve discussing cases, reviewing treatment plans, addressing ethical concerns, and receiving feedback and support to enhance the intern’s clinical skills.
  6. Recording Supervised Hours: Interns keep detailed records of their supervised hours and submit regular progress reports to the BBS, documenting their clinical experience and demonstrating their competence in specific areas of practice.
  7. Licensure Application: Once the required number of supervised hours is completed, the intern can apply for licensure with the BBS. This typically involves submitting the necessary paperwork, transcripts, and proof of completed supervised hours.
  8. Licensing Exam: In addition to meeting the supervised experience requirements, interns are required to pass a state-approved licensing exam, which assesses their knowledge and competence in their chosen mental health field.
  9. License Issuance: Upon successful completion of all requirements, the BBS reviews the application and exam results, and if everything is satisfactory, the individual is granted licensure as a qualified mental health professional.

It’s important to note that the specific requirements for clinical supervision and licensure may vary depending on the state, so aspiring mental health professionals should always check the guidelines and regulations set forth by the BBS in their respective states for accurate and up-to-date information.

The principal goals of clinical supervision:

  • to enhance supervisees’ skills, competence, and confidence
  • to provide a reflective space and emotional support
  • to assist with professional development

“Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.” -Lao Tzu.

Social anxiety is one of the most common forms of anxiety. It is also highly treatable. However, without treatment, social anxiety does not typically resolve on its own.

People with social anxiety often limit how they live their lives as a way to alleviate the symptoms – but research shows, that avoidance is one of the worst ways to deal with social anxiety. While avoidance can provide short-term relief, it only reinforces the fear/worry and delivers a message that you are incapable of coping with the feared situation. These are limiting beliefs that MUST be challenged.

The gold standard for treating social anxiety is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) – click here to learn more.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SOCIAL ANXIETY
Social anxiety is often more than a fear of interacting with others. If you suffer from social anxiety, you may often worry that others will judge you negatively. The condition may be mild. When severe, it can have a large negative impact on your quality of life.

Social anxiety can cause physical symptom:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Increased heart rate
  • Shaking
  • Sweating

Anxious thoughts are also very common. These can include thoughts like, “No one will like me,” or “I don’t belong.” Those with social anxiety might also:

  • Apologize often
  • Seek frequent reassurance from others
  • Spend a lot of time preparing for social situations
  • Avoid entering social situations
  • Leave situations abruptly

You may often want to enjoy socializing. You may even wish to make friends, date and be included in group activities. But the anxiety can prevent you from doing so. It may make you look withdrawn, unapproachable or shy. You may seem uninterested in social activities.

People with social anxiety may put much of their energy into avoiding triggers:

  •  Using alcohol to cope in social situations
  • Finding excuses to leave the situation
  • Trying not to draw attention.
  • Avoid smiling or eye contact.
  • Not contributing to a conversation or not say much
  • Distracting yourself by daydreaming or mentally leaving the situation

Therapy can help with social anxiety.
It is important to seek help if social anxiety interferes with your life.
Long-term social anxiety may cause additional mental health issues. These can include loneliness and depression.

Healing from grief is not about moving on but about moving forward.

Grief and bereavement are interconnected terms that refer to the emotional and psychological response to the experience of major changes, or losing someone or something significant. While they are often used interchangeably, they have distinct meanings in the context of coping with loss.

Grief: Grief is the complex and natural emotional reaction to any kind of loss, not just the death of a loved one. It is a profound and personal response that encompasses a range of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. When individuals experience grief, they may feel intense sadness, loneliness, anger, confusion, or a mixture of emotions. Grief can also manifest physically, affecting appetite, sleep patterns, and overall well-being. The grieving process is unique to each person and may be influenced by cultural, social, and individual factors. It is important to note that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to grieve, and the process can be non-linear, with emotions coming and going in waves.

Bereavement: Bereavement specifically refers to the experience of losing a loved one through death. It is the state of being deprived of someone significant due to their passing. Bereavement marks the beginning of the grieving process, during which individuals must come to terms with the reality of their loved one’s absence. Bereavement often involves mourning, which encompasses rituals, ceremonies and practices that allow individuals to express their grief and pay tribute to the deceased. These rituals may include funerals, memorials, or personal acts of remembrance.

The Grief Journey:

We understand that navigating the journey of grief and loss can be overwhelming and challenging. We are here to offer you compassionate support and understanding during this difficult time. Our grief and bereavement support services are designed to help you process your emotions, find comfort, and embrace healing as you honor your memories, loss and experiences.

At the heart of our grief support services is the recognition that grief is a deeply personal and unique experience for each individual. Our team of compassionate professionals are committed to providing a safe and non-judgmental space for you to express your feelings and emotions openly.

The journey of grief and bereavement is not a linear process with a fixed timeline; instead, individuals may move through different stages of grief, experiencing a range of emotions along the way. Common stages of grief include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. However, it is essential to recognize that not everyone will experience each stage, and the grieving process is highly individualized.

Support and Healing:

During times of grief and bereavement, seeking support from friends, family, or professional counselors can be invaluable. Connecting with others who have experienced similar losses can offer understanding and comfort. Additionally, engaging in self-care activities and finding healthy coping mechanisms can help individuals navigate the grieving process and gradually move toward healing.

Understanding grief and bereavement as natural and valid responses to loss is essential for promoting empathy and support for those who are grieving. By acknowledging the complexities of grief and embracing the uniqueness of each person’s journey, we can create a compassionate and understanding environment that encourages healing and hope in the face of loss.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Impacts Children and Adults

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a type of anxiety disorder. OCD is a chronic and debilitating mental health condition that can affect both adults and children. In adults, OCD is characterized by the presence of persistent and intrusive thoughts, known as obsessions, that evoke intense anxiety. To alleviate these distressing thoughts, individuals engage in repetitive behaviors or mental rituals, known as compulsions. However, these compulsive actions provide only temporary relief and can interfere significantly with daily life, relationships, and overall functioning. Similarly, in children, OCD manifests with similar symptoms but may present differently due to developmental factors. Children with OCD may struggle to articulate their distress or engage in age-appropriate compulsive behaviors. Early identification and intervention are crucial in managing OCD effectively and enabling individuals of all ages to lead fulfilling and balanced lives.

Common symptoms of OCD:

  • An extreme obsession that triggers fear and anxiety
  • Repeated doubts, such as whether or not the door is locked
  • Interfering thoughts about violence, hurting or killing someone, or harming oneself
  • Long periods of time spent touching things, counting, and thinking about numbers and sequences
  • Preoccupation with order, symmetry, or exactness
  • Ongoing thoughts about doing offensive sexual acts or forbidden, taboo behaviors
  • Troubled by thoughts that are against personal religious beliefs
  • A great need to know or remember things that may be very minor
  • Excessive attention to detail
  • Excessive worrying that something bad will happen
  • Aggressive thoughts, urges, or behaviors

Compulsive behaviors are the repetitive rituals used to ease anxiety caused by the obsessions. They can be excessive, disruptive, and time-consuming. They may interfere with daily activities and relationships. They may include:

  • Repeated handwashing (some cases up to 100 or more times a day)
  • Checking and rechecking many times, such as making sure that the door is locked
  • Following firm rules of order, such as putting on clothes in the very same order each day
  • Hoarding objects
  • Counting and recounting
  • Grouping objects

Treatment for OCD typically involves a combination of evidence-based methods and, in some cases, medication. The primary goal of treatment is to reduce the severity of obsessions and compulsions, improve daily functioning, and enhance the individual’s quality of life. Here are the main components of treatment for OCD:

  1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is considered the first-line treatment for OCD. This therapy involves two main components: exposure and response prevention (ERP) and cognitive restructuring. ERP helps individuals confront their obsessions gradually while resisting the urge to engage in compulsive behaviors. Over time, this process reduces the anxiety associated with the obsessions. Cognitive restructuring focuses on challenging and modifying unhelpful thought patterns related to the obsessions.
  2. Medication: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly prescribed medications for OCD. These antidepressant medications can help alleviate symptoms by affecting serotonin levels in the brain. It is essential to work closely with a psychiatrist to find the right medication and dosage for each individual.
  3. Mindfulness-Based Therapies: Mindfulness-based approaches, such as Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), can complement traditional treatment methods by helping individuals develop greater awareness of their thoughts and emotions without judgment.
  4. Support Groups: Joining OCD support groups can provide individuals with a sense of community and understanding as they share experiences and coping strategies with others facing similar challenges.
  5. Family Therapy: In cases involving children or adolescents with OCD, family therapy can be beneficial in fostering understanding, support, and communication within the family unit.
  6. Education and Psychoeducation: Learning about OCD and its treatment can empower individuals to better understand their condition, normalize their experiences, and actively participate in their treatment journey.
  7. Lifestyle Changes: Incorporating healthy lifestyle practices, such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and sufficient sleep, can contribute to overall well-being and support OCD management.
  8. Gradual Exposure and Practice: Regular and gradual exposure to triggers and situations that elicit obsessive thoughts, along with practicing resisting the related compulsions, can help reinforce the brain’s rewiring process and weaken the OCD cycle.

Treatment for OCD is often personalized to meet each individual’s specific needs and symptom severity. It may require persistence and dedication, but with the right approach and professional support, many individuals with OCD can achieve significant improvements in their symptoms and overall functioning, leading to a better quality of life. There are also programs, such as Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), available to more severe cases.

The Importance of Parent Management Training (PMT)

Parent Management Training (PMT) is a crucial and valuable resource for parents and families, as it provides evidence-based techniques and strategies to address challenging behaviors in children effectively. It emphasizes the importance of positive parent-child interactions, fostering healthy attachment, and promoting the overall well-being of both parents and children. PMT equips parents with the necessary skills to create a nurturing and supportive environment at home, which significantly impacts a child’s emotional, social, and behavioral development. By offering parents the tools they need to manage challenging behaviors constructively, PMT reduces stress and frustration, enhances parent-child communication, and strengthens the family unit as a whole.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development states parents are generally responsible for:

  • Keeping children safe
  • Listening to children and spending time with them
  • Providing affection, order, and consistency
  • Setting and enforcing limits for children
  • Monitoring friendship and relationships that children make
  • Seeking help for any medical or behavioral concerns

Having a healthy relationship – with yourself and/or with your partner – is the best gift you can give your child.

At Optimind, we want to support you as you navigate the beautiful, unique chaos of being a parent. Society does a great job of preparing us for the material things we will need to succeed as a parent. Ensuring we have a roof over our heads, finding a nice neighborhood, finding reviews on the best cribs, car seats, strollers, nursery decor, the best schools, education and we even have plenty of resources to surf through when it comes to parenting and how to raise kids in the modern age.

But there’s a big gap.

Parenting is hard and this phase of life has the potential to crush the best of us – even the best single parents or couples will struggle.  If you aren’t intentional about staying on a healthy track with yourself and/or together with a partner, you will leave very little fighting chance to improve on parenting.
